Rapid PHBs in Kent & Medway

Kent & Medway ICB is the latest NHS organisation to select PPL's Virtual Wallet solution to manage rapid-payment Personal Health Budgets to improve hospital discharge.

In accordance with NHS England Guidance that promotes the use of one-off personal health budgets to enable timely discharge from hospital, Kent & Medway had tried different approaches but felt that improvements could be made.

The model developed with Kent & Medway gives front-line staff two options:

  1. Invoice payment - having already identified a supplier (such as a handyman or a cleaning service), the invoice is processed and paid with a target of a same-day payment being made.

  2. Product purchase - having identified a product (via an online retailer such as Amazon), the order is placed by the PPL on the same day and then delivered direct to the patient.

The model is being piloted in one area, and if successful will be rolled out across the region.  A similar model is already successfully operating in other areas, such as Cheshire & Merseyside ICB, where options include invoice payment, small cash transfers (to the patient or a family member) or the purchase of vouchers for use at online & high-street retailers.
